Blog #7

Hello group!! I can not believe how fast spring break went by. I kind of get an extra spring break because Monday I came down with strep throat. I let it get so bad that I can not even swallow :(. I at least was able to take a road trip to Auburn, Alabama with my friend Becky last week, and I went to the beach several times. I hope everyone was safe and enjoyed the relaxation!

Movie Assignment I found that the movie assignment summed up everything that we have been learning the last several weeks. I also liked how each movie looked at HIV from a different angle. What I did not like was that they kept saying people had AIDS; therefore, it messed up my written assignment because I just wrote what they were saying. My favorite one was Common Threads due to that fact that it allowed us to see how many people have died during that time. I do not understand why the government let it get so bad, and how the United States could be completely ignorant of what was occurring around them.

Did You Know?! Did you know that in 2008 a man sued the Beijing's Ditan Hospital because an HIV contaminated needle dropped on his foot (Mu, 2008). While he was visiting a friend in the hospital, a nurse had dropped the needle that was used to draw blood from an HIV positive patient. The victim bled upon contact. The hospital offered three months worth of anti-viral treatment that caused him to be dizzy and have hair loss. I find it to be ridiculous that this could possibly happen. I showed you guys pictures of different needles that could help eliminate this problem, and I think hospitals everywhere need to spend the necessary money to protect themselves and their patients. The hospital refused to pay for emotional distress.

  1. Wow, I can't believe the hospital was not forced to pay for emotional distress. This is a problem that could have been easily prevented and the hospital should pay the consequences. I also made the same mistake with AIDS vs. HIV terminology in the movie assignment. Atleast only a small amount of points was taken off. I'm glad you had a good spring break but sorry to hear about strep throat. Strep throat is the worst!!

  2. I am sorry to hear that you got strep throat. I just got over that not too long ago. At least you were able to go to the beach and enjoy yourself. I felt like it was too cold for the beach everyday, and I pretty much stayed inside catching up on some work.

I enjoyed Common Threads as well because it was so candid and the storytellers were put in comforable positions to just talk about their loved ones and how they might have been mistreated. I am interested to know how you all felt about Silverlake Life!

  3. Courtney, first of all, let's get one thing straight...strep throat is no vacation! Ha ha! You poor thing...I hope that you are feeling better. At least you got some beach time before hand. And if anything maybe the strep experience reminded you of the thrush experiment we did a little while back?

I enjoyed Common Threads as well, but I think my favorite movie was Silverlake Life. It was so raw I couldn't keep my eyes off of the screen. The emotion in that movie was very powerful. The ending was very sad, but unfortunately reality bites.

Your Did You Know section was an interesting read. I'm surprised that hospital staff can still be this irresponsible, and only two short years ago. It sounds like some new training guidelines are in order, for sure.

    Take care, and stay well!

  4. Hope you are feeling better, Courtney. Judges here in the US throw cases out of court where the person was told they were HIV positive, put on drugs and then found out it was a false positive. No harm done the judge said. Three months of drug therapy is a bit extreme. Here it would be for one month only.
